Description

Ground Ivy is a perennial, creeping plant with square stems and round to kidney-shaped leaves with scalloped edges. It produces small, funnel-shaped blue to violet flowers, typically blooming in spring. The plant has a characteristic minty aroma when crushed.

Distribution

Native to Europe and Western Asia, Ground Ivy is now widespread in North America and other temperate regions, often found in shady, moist areas such as woodlands and gardens.

Medicinal/Other Uses

✅ Historically used in herbal medicine for its anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. It was also used in brewing beer before the introduction of hops.

Edibility  

Edible - young leaves can be used in salads or cooked as a potherb, though they have a strong flavour.
