Description
A tall, showy perennial with spikes of bright pink-purple flowers, often seen in large drifts. Known as the “fireweed” because it is one of the first plants to colonise burnt or disturbed ground. After World War II, it famously covered many bomb sites in London.
Distribution
Native to Europe and Asia, widespread throughout the UK along roadsides, woodland clearings, railway embankments, and wasteland.
Medicinal/Other Uses

Traditionally used to treat wounds, digestive issues, and respiratory ailments. Modern herbal use is mostly limited to mild anti-inflammatory teas.
Edibility
Young shoots are edible when cooked, sometimes compared to asparagus. Flowers are occasionally used to make herbal teas or syrups.
