Flower Details
Description
A vigorous deciduous climber, sometimes called “Mile-a-Minute” for its speed of growth. It produces masses of small, white flowers that give walls and trellises a frothy appearance in late summer and autumn. Native to Central Asia, it was introduced to the UK as an ornamental plant but has since become naturalised and can be invasive, smothering hedges and trees.
Distribution
Cultivated widely in gardens and found escaped into the wild in parts of the UK and Europe.
Medicinal/Other Uses
Not traditionally used medicinally in Europe.
Edibility
Not considered edible.
Human Toxicity
Generally non-toxic, though excessive ingestion of leaves is not recommended. Its main “hazard” is ecological, as it can overwhelm native plants.
Pet Toxicity
Not Toxic
Active Compounds
Limited research; contains tannins and phenolic compounds typical of the Polygonaceae family
