Description
A tropical evergreen shrub with clusters of small, brightly coloured flowers that change hue as they age. Common in ornamental gardens and warm climates. Attractive to butterflies and bees.
Distribution
Native to Central and South America, cultivated worldwide and considered invasive in many regions (notably the Mediterranean).
Medicinal/Other Uses
Used traditionally for fever, skin ailments, and respiratory issues, though internal use is not recommended due to toxicity.
Edibility
berries and leaves should not be eaten.
Human Toxicity

All parts contain lantadenes, potent toxins that affect the liver and cause photosensitivity in livestock and pets.

Highly toxic — ingestion causes vomiting, weakness, liver damage, and possibly death in cats, dogs, and grazing animals.
